All stages of production are carried out in the Szeged Region, from sowing to packaging. What are the main characteristics of this Protected Designation of Origin (D.O.P.) Szeged Hungarian paprika that make it really special?

Thanks to the traditional millstone grounding used, the paprika is typically homogeneous in texture and is very fine. Depending on the pigment level, the paprika is bright fiery red or lighter red in color. The smell is intense, spicy and aromatic, similar to that of roasted vegetables as a result of the processes that take place in the paprika during drying. The flavor is typically sweet, reminiscent of ripe and roasted pumpkins and fresh garden plants, with a lingering, mild, pleasant aroma.

Worth it

I've been cooking classic Hungarian dishes from my home in Canada that my Hungarian Nagymana taught me before she died, and the quality of paprika used in these dishes has a huge impact on the overall quality of the final product. Locally, the best paprika we can buy is Pride of Szeged brand, which I thought was pretty good until I tried this Rubin brand. The colour is shocking, and the floral complexity is like nothing I've ever tasted or smelled before. I made some chicken paprikash with this the day I received it and was blown away. It's certainly expensive, but in my opinion it's worth it, at the very least for special occasions. It's also a fantastic way to support the Hungarian economy from afar. Highly recommend
